Lesson 1:

Introducing Unit 2.2.

The unit is introduced by reviewing the essential questions. Then students jot down what they know about what happens during wartime. These activities could be done independently, by assigning workbook pages 3 and 4, but may be more powerful if they are done as a class.

Previewing unit materials and making predictions.

Students should preview the three unit texts, and make predictions about what they will learn in the unit. If they have copies of the unit books (virtual or hard copies), they can complete this activity independently, in pairs, or as a whole class. If they do not have copies of the texts, you could consider sharing summaries of unit texts.

Journal write.

Students write about their personal experiences (if any) with war, and the events of September 11, 2001. They can do this independently using the fillable PDF workbook page, but make a plan to collect and review the assignment. This will help you to be sensitive to individual students’ experiences as you teach this unit.
