Lesson 12:

Memory poems with “Oranges.”

In this lesson, students read a fourth poem and continue reflecting on the characteristics of poetry. Students should come away from this lesson understanding that poems typically include sensory details and metaphors, and often tell a personal story about a moment of transformation. The lesson plan suggests creating a concept map as a class to develop these understandings. Although students may read the poem and complete the workbook pages independently or with a partner, a whole class discussion of the characteristics of poetry is essential to build a foundation for understanding the novel.
