Unit launch: Are these people a family?

The theme of Unit 1.2 is, “What makes a family?” This lesson introduces this idea by having students read vignettes and decide whether or not the people described are a family. Students may complete these workbook pages independently, but a whole-class discussion of the content is essential to make sure that students understand the unit theme.
