    World War I not only had significant domestic and global consequences, but it also had personal consequences for the soldiers that fought in it. Soldiers in World War I were exposed to high levels of stress for months at a time in very difficult living conditions.

    When the war ended and they came home, medical professionals noticed that many soldiers were still experiencing very high levels of stress, even though the war had ended. That stress changed their behavior. They called it shell shock

    Today, we call it post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and it is still commonly diagnosed in returning soldiers.
