Lesson 36:
Preparing for the poetry slam.
To honor the role of poetry in the unit, the unit concludes with a poetry slam. Your students could certainly engage in a live, online “slam.” Alternatively, this activity may translate fairly well to asynchronous implementation. https://www.favoritepoem.org/ offers a number of videos of people reciting a favorite poem, and saying a few words about why this poem is their favorite. Consider sharing this website with your students and assigning them the task of creating a similar video.
In this first lesson preparing for the slam, students should select a poem, copy it into their workbooks, and annotate the poem with notes about how it will be performed.
